I thought about what to write you today. What to say about taxes—on the day before the 4th of July—while we’re on the brink of a potentially sweeping tax bill, and in the middle of an era marked by rapid, relentless change.
This summer, I’m writing to you from Romania. I’m visiting my mother in the country where I grew up. But it’s not the Romania I remember. The version I knew was communist, repressive, and limiting.
At 15, I packed a suitcase and left—because I could.
After becoming a CPA, I came to the U.S. with a deep knowing in my gut: this is the place where I could become anything I wanted to be. No ceilings. No limits—if you’re willing to work for it.
Over time—filing return after return, audit after audit (and winning them)—I started noticing patterns. And when the financial world cracked open in 2008, I paid attention.
The people who came out stronger had one thing in common: they paid attention to their money. They protected it. They invested it. And most importantly—they used the tax law the way it was designed to be used.
